Creating a Test Sample

Let's see how to create a new test using the Editor program. You can find this example in the Samples directory, "UTTestSample1.uta" file.

1. First of all, you need to create a new test.

Select New... from the File menu, or press the button on the Standard toolbar. You will see the "Create New Test" dialog. Here you can select the new test path and name.

For example, let's name it "UTTestSample1.uta" and put it in the current directory.

Then you need to press the OK button to create a test with that name and put it in the chosen directory.

2. Now you can see the empty test. Let's name it and set up the time for testing.

First, you need to open Test Properties dialog (for now, we are interested in General tab on it). To do it, select Properties... from the File menu.

Now you can just type in the test name and a test time in these fields. For example, let's type "Math test: algebra" in the Test Name input field. You can limit test time either:

  1. by total test time ("Use Question Timing" checkbox must be unchecked and correct time must be entered in Test Time input field) or
  2. by time for every question ("Use Question Timing" checkbox must be checked and correct time for every question must be entered in field on Question Timing toolbar).

For example, we want to limit the test by total type. Let's type "00:07:00" in the Test Time field ("Use Question Timing" checkbox must be unchecked).

Of course, to apply changes, you need to press the OK button.

3. Now your new test has a name and time for the test. Let's create the first question.

Select the Question field (also, we can call the question field and the answers fields as "containers", because they contain questions and answers). To select the Question container, just click it, or select Question from the Window menu.

Now select Create Microsoft Word Object from the Container menu, or press the button on the Create OLE toolbar. You created a new object (Microsoft Word document) in your question container.

4. Since you created a new object, you can edit it.

To open the object (in this case it's the Microsoft Word document) for editing in a separate window, you need to select Second Verb from the Container menu, or press the button on the Controlling OLE toolbar. Another and more universal way (because sometimes the Second Verb does different thing or does nothing) is to select "Open" from the dropdown menu on the Controlling OLE toolbar and press button (to start selected command). Also you can do the same by selecting Open from the Run Verb sub menu of the Container menu.

To open an object for editing in the Editor program window, you need to select First Verb from the Container menu, or press the button on the Controlling OLE toolbar. Another way is to select "Edit" from the dropdown menu on the Controlling OLE toolbar and press button (to start selected command).

For example, let us say that you selected "Edit". Now you can work as usual with Microsoft Word documents.

When you finish entering data, select Stop Verb from the Container menu, or press the button on the Controlling OLE toolbar.

All changes will be applied and you will see the data entered in the Question container.

5. In the same way you can create answers and fill containers in other questions. But you can fill containers with data using internal editor.

Select, for example, the Answer 1 container and tell program that you would like to fill it using internal editor. To do it, just check RTF Container from the Container menu. As a result, you will see that the selected container became white.

Now, you can enter data directly in the container field (but usually it's more comfortable to edit already entered data this way) or you can open internal editor (internal editor is close to simplified MS Word or to MS WordPad). To open internal editor, just double-click on the container. In the opened internal editor window you can enter text, graphics, OLE objects and so on.

All changes will be applied as soon as you will close the editor.

6. We almost created the first question. For example, assume your first question has only one correct answer (Answer 1) and one partially correct (50 %) answer (Answer 2). Let's point out it.

So, your question type is "Simple Answer" (answer without any sets or associations). That's why you select (if needed) Simple Answer from the Question Type sub menu of the Question menu.

Then, you need to select the Answer 1 container and select the Correct Answer form Container menu, or press the button on the Answer Confirmation toolbar. Another way is to enter 100 (%) in the confirmation factor input field (since the answer is totally correct) on the Answer Confirmation toolbar.

Let's point to partially correct answer. Select the Answer 2 container and enter 50 (%) in the confirmation factor input field (since the answer is 50% correct) on the Answer Confirmation toolbar.

7. Now Answer 1 is the correct and Answer 2 is partially correct answer to the first question. Let's create questions with set, ordered set and association.

To create a new question you only need to move to the next question. Select Next Question from the Navigation menu, or press the button on the Navigation toolbar.

7.1. Creating question with answer set.

Now let's point out the type of the second question. For example, to answer this question you need to select a few correct expressions. It means that the type of this question is Answer Set. Now you can fill in the Question, Answer 1, etc. containers just like before.

After filling the question with data you need to set the correct answer, for example, it is the set of answer 1, answer 3 and answer 4 (or 1, 4 and 3, i.e. in any order). To select this set as a correct answer you need to check checkboxes No 1, 3 and 4 on the Combinations toolbar. As a result you will see these numbers (numbers of answers) separated with comma in the field to the right of the checkboxes.

7.2. Creating question with ordered answer set.

You have moved to the third question. For example, to answer third question you need to select processors in power descending order. It means that the type of this question is Ordered Answer Set. Then you can fill question with data.

After filling the question with data you need to set the correct answer, for example, the correct answer is order answer 1, answer 2, answer 4 and answer 3. To set this order, you need to check checkboxes No 1, 2, 4 and 2 (on the Combinations toolbar) in the same order. As a result you will see the order applied in the field to the right of the checkboxes. This field must display 1,2,4,3.

7.3. Creating question with associations.

Now you have moved to the fourth question. For example, to answer this question you need to associate one expressions to other. It means that the type of this question is Association. Then you can fill question with data.

After filling the question with data you need to set the correct answer, for example, the correct associations are 1->3, 2->2, 3->1. To set this answer, you need to check checkbox No 1 on the left side, then No 3 on the right side, No 2 on the left side, then No 2 on the right side and No 3 on the left side, then No 1 on the right side. Checkboxes will be divided onto two groups, so you will easily understand, where is the left side ends and where is the right side starts. After these manipulations you will see selected association number pairs (connected with "->") and separated with commas in the "selected answer indicator" field (i.e. you will see "1->3,2->2,3->1").

8. Now let's create a third question with interactive video and an ordered answers set as an answer.

8.1 Creating a video object and making it interactive

For example, let's make interactive a video in the question container.

Select the Question container, then select the Create OLE Object from the Container menu, or press the button on the Create OLE toolbar (RTF Container in the Container menu must be unchecked, because we want to work with OLE object).

In the opened dialog, you can select "Videoclip" or another video OLE object (if available). For example, select "Videoclip".

Now you need to select "Open" from the dropdown menu and press button menu on the Controlling OLE toolbar. Another way to do the same is to select Open from the Run Verb sub menu of the Container menu. In the opened program (Microsoft Universal Player), select Open... from the File menu, and then browse for any video file you wish.

Now you can select Exit and Return to Question from the File menu.

So, you have a Question container with a video within. But you need to make it interactive (to let the student play the video). To do this, select "Play" (to let the student "Play" the video by right-clicking on the Question container) from the interactivity combo box on the Interactivity toolbar.

9. Finally, let's set up the points for the correct answer on your question

Let's say question 1 is very easy - 1 point for the correct answer; question 3 is harder - 3 points and question 2 is the hardest one - 5 points.

To set the points for question 1, first of all, go to the question. You can do this in two different ways:

  1. Using the Prior Question and Next Question navigation commands in the Navigation menu, or clicking the and buttons on the Navigation toolbar.
  2. Using the "Go to Question Number" dialog (the Go to Question Number... command in Navigation menu, or the button on the Navigation toolbar) or using input field and button on the same toolbar.

When you move to question 1, enter "1" (one point) in the "Number of points for the correct answer" input field on the Answer Confirmation toolbar.

Then go to question 2 and enter "5" (five points), then to question 3 and enter "3" (three points).

10. Preparing the test for processing in the Test program.

To process a created test using the Test program, you must first set it as default.

To set the current test as default, select Make Default from the File menu. Another way to set up a default test is to use the Settings program (See Settings - The "General" tab).

In the Settings program you also can set up a password for the default test (this password will be used by the UniTest System programs to access the default test), if you do not want to enter it manually each time you need to edit/process your test.

Now your test is ready for processing in the Test program. You can save it (if you haven't done it before) by selecting Save from File menu, or pressing the button on the Standard toolbar.

You can check the created test by running it in the Test program (select Test from the UniTest Starter program menu).
